Sugar and Spice: A Shared Birthday

Sisters Unique is in full celebration mode.  Earlier this summer, we threw a baby shower for one of our precious girls, Rachyl Johnson.  Last Thursday, during the wee hours of the morning, she became a birthday girl and a first-time mom.  It turns out that mommy and baby girl share the same birthday — August 26th!  Little Penelope Mae made her big debut at precisely 12:01 that morning, weighing in at 7 pounds 7 ounces and sporting a button nose and a tuft of hair.

Rachyl has been a part of the fabric of Sisters for years.  She first came to work for the store during high school and has always managed to fill an integral spot in the Sisterhood.  Since moving to Florida this summer with husband, Joel, she’s been sorely missed.  Before they headed south, Rachyl presented us with a homemade suitcase and a corresponding farewell poem.

The Traveling Sisterhood
Rachyl Johnson

There's a beat up old suitcase filled with unimaginable treasure
It's not full of raggedy old clothes and worn down shoes
But rather things one cannot measure

Inside there are lessons for all walks of life
There are stories for those who will listen
And wisdom for the newlywed wife

It's full of how t0's and recipe finders
Decorating tips, home making advice
And hospitality reminders

Don't be fooled by the scuff marks & a banged up edge
Of this suitcase torn and tattered by time
For it's laden with wisdom of those who've gone ahead

It's never locked up or kept far from reach
It is open to those who are hungry
And there are many willing to teach

This suitcase is different form any other I know
For the riches inside never leave those who go...

You see, I know a place where sisters gather
And unpack their luggage
To talk about life and the things that matter

And when the seasons change in one's journey to and from
The bitter is softened by sweet
For this suitcase travels with all those who go

Round Up: Alphabet Soup

The ABC’s don’t just belong in the classroom.  From time to time, letters make a trendy appearance in interior design.  Monograms, typography, letterpress, swirly fonts — you name it.  Take a look at some fun alphabet finds we’ve stumbled upon.  We’re crazy about these ideas!

Inspired by vintage printing blocks, this quirky chest of drawers from Kent and London has cubbies for every letter!

Check out this multi-colored graphic double hook from Urban Outfitters.  Easy to get hooked on this edgy wall accessory!

Fishs Eddy got creative with their alphabet mugs.  Every monogram has its own flair!  How cute would these be in your kitchen cupboard?

The sassy pom-pom fringe on this RJB Stone letter cushion cover spells STYLE!

Whimsical letterforms from Jeanie & Jewell would be darling wall posters in a nursery.

This is more than a jumble of giant letters.  Think bookcase — courtesy of designer Pieter de Leeuw.

For the letterpress junkie, how about these wood type initials from Three Potato Four?  A great statement piece on a shelf or bookcase.

Doggy Days… Continued

We have entirely too much fun here at Sisters.  The first Doggy Days event was such a hit that we had to try for an encore.  A few weeks ago, Sisters artist Jennifer Brewer pulled out her magic pencils again and sketched more sweet pet portraits.  Her inspiration is the day-to-day dialogue between master and pet — all those goofy commands, affectionate nicknames and silly expressions.

“It’s called The Art of Conversation because the portraits are actually made up of the words you use in conversation with your pet,” Jennifer says.  ”It’s interesting to look at your relationships as a continuous conversation.  And with our animal friends, this is a playful and unique art.  Especially since we have different ‘languages.’”

The man of the hour was there, too — Jennifer’s spunky Malti-shih-poo named Oliver Twist.  (He was a little less camera shy this time.)

If you missed the event, not to worry.  Jennifer will take pet portrait orders anytime.  Just bring in a favorite photo of your pet and ask for Jen!

A Fresh Take on Bookends

Bookends really don’t get enough attention.  They’re often an afterthought – thrown up on a shelf to keeps rows of dusty novels standing upright.  We know that bookends are necessary and functional, but they’re allowed to have a little personality, too.  Break up the monotonous parade of books with a snazzy shelf accessory.  You might be surprised at what you can use…

Check out these clever bookend ideas from Sisters designer Kaye Kaminski!

Dressed in Damask

We think every dream home should include a room or two of Thibaut.  They sure do know how to dress a wall.  In one of their brand new collections, Damask Resource Volume 3, Thibaut debuts a line of breathtaking wall coverings.  We’re in love with Thibaut… is it obvious?

“Thibaut has translated the ancient weaving technique of Damask into beautiful wallpaper prints for the modern living space. Using varying printing techniques and paper types, Damask Resource Volume 3 diversifies its appeal by expanding the impact of this traditional art form.”

The Recipe Box: Apricot Bread

Sisters co-owner Joy Wynings loves apricots.  She recently experimented with a recipe for apricot bread from ifood.tv.com.  Hands down… this one’s a keeper.  (Her taste testers concur.)  The tiny golden fruit may be an unexpected ingredient in bread, but it packs big flavor.  Joy’s personal finishing touch is dusting of powdered sugar on top.  A little bit of breakfast heaven.

Design by Number: 80/20

There’s a principle in the interior design world called the 80/20 rule.  You don’t need to be a math whiz to get this… honest.  When decorating a space, the idea is to use 80% neutrals (the “bones” – upholstery, furniture) and 20% color (accessories – lamps, pillows, etc).  It’s a good rule of thumb for those of us who are terrified of committing to any one color.  This lets you switch up colors as the seasons change or as your style morphs.  In short:  ”Use strong color sparingly to punctuate the room, not define it.” – Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, co-founder of Apartment Therapy.

Ladies, think about makeup.  Ruby red lips or smokey eyes, for example.  These make a colorful statement (20%), while the rest of the face is neutral (80%) with an occasional whisper of blush.  Apartment Therapy gives more insight.

Pretty simple, right?  Kiss your color phobia goodbye.

About a Suitcase

Nobody likes goodbyes.  Not if they’re being honest.  But at Sisters, we embrace them (and add a little style while we’re at it).  Recently, one of our dear employees moved far, far away to a land called Florida.  She left a parting gift:  a homemade foam board suitcase embellished with green yarn, leopard-print ribbon and old-fashioned postcards.  In her farewell poem called “The Traveling Sisterhood,” she reminded us that the sweet times help numb the sting of goodbye.

The little suitcase is displayed proudly at the store — a constant reminder.

For you, sweet Rachyl.
