Design by Number: 80/20

There’s a principle in the interior design world called the 80/20 rule.  You don’t need to be a math whiz to get this… honest.  When decorating a space, the idea is to use 80% neutrals (the “bones” – upholstery, furniture) and 20% color (accessories – lamps, pillows, etc).  It’s a good rule of thumb for those of us who are terrified of committing to any one color.  This lets you switch up colors as the seasons change or as your style morphs.  In short:  ”Use strong color sparingly to punctuate the room, not define it.” – Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, co-founder of Apartment Therapy.

Ladies, think about makeup.  Ruby red lips or smokey eyes, for example.  These make a colorful statement (20%), while the rest of the face is neutral (80%) with an occasional whisper of blush.  Apartment Therapy gives more insight.

Pretty simple, right?  Kiss your color phobia goodbye.
