What Is It, And Why Us?

As the owners of Sisters Unique, we’d love to formally introduce you to our Design Team.  We were all born and raised in the South.  We believe in sugar, bread, and chocolate.  Can we get you a nice glass of sweet tea and some espresso fudge? Thank you very much for the company….

We have been at this awhile. And we lo-ove design.  Nothing makes us happier than helping others live well.

That’s why we chose to develop a Design Team to carry on the vision.  They’re here to help inspire you to GO FOR IT!!!

We are not satisfied until ya love, love, looove it!

Our Design Team will help you focus and move you through the big and little decisions of the interior design process.

Our Design Team works together with you.  Each space is different and has its own styling potential. Once you sign-on, you can be in touch with your designer as needed.  Of course, you’re always welcome to drop by the store with your concerns as well.

You’ll get design plans that’ll garner you the reward of a well-planned house for years to come. As far as we’re concerned, there’s nothin’ betta than that!

Our design team is industry trained to bring you current and vibrant personal designs.  Their goal is to develop and design within your own personal style.

Our Design Team is fully trained in prioritizing your design plans according to your budget.  Yes, we’ll serve you with ”marching orders” you can trust to wear well, but you’ll call the shots as far as timing.  We are available by request each step of the way.

Though most of us learn the hard way one  time or another, why do that now.  Especially as it involves the designing of your home.

We’re glad to meet with you no matter where you are on the journey. After all, interior design is a process, right?

So come on in and pull up a chair. Let’s chat a bit about planning the design of your house.

 See you soon,

Joy & Kaye

MEET THE DESIGN TEAM OF SISTERS UNIQUE

________________

KAYE KAMINSKI

Kaye Kaminski and her sister Joy Wynings own Sisters Unique.  Kaye is a buyer and designer for Sisters and gets great pleasure in finding wonderfully unique product for clients and for the store.    She says she has been in retail and design for a hundred years, has a great eye for color and a love affair with fabric.  She loves to work with fabrics that are current but have longevity and is known to throw something quirky into the mix just to keep it interesting.

Kaye is a self-taught designer whose training started early with a very talented grandmother and mother. “Grandma designed patterns from Shirley Temple coloring books and made them into beautiful dresses for my mom. That talent was transferred to mom, and growing up in that environment gave me a valuable understanding of sewing, fabrics and fabrication.”   Kaye has a passion for interiors, books and magazines.  She says that most of her skills were honed from the printed page but has picked up a few good tips from her twenty years job experience.

Kaye’s philosophy is “A good designer will gladly work with the clients’ favorite pieces, collected and loved for one reason or another.  Sometimes things are special because of their linage or the memories they evoke.  My job as a designer is to create a fresh new look by building on the ‘good bones’ already in place and create a room that embodies all the things you love.   A challenge for the client is to have the courage to let go of things that no longer work with their décor or aid in the function of their home.”

Kaye loves French Country design, mixed with some traditional bones and calm colors, peppered with a little punch of color here and there.  Blues and whites are the primary palettes used in the Cape Cod style home her husband, John, built for them in 1982.   She and John love detailed molding and say that a house with great trim and architecture is beautiful empty.  She loves to play with her grandchildren, who call her Gigi, and says she drinks way too much Diet Coke!  A perfect day for her is to stay in her pj’s all morning, make a fresh batch of cookies, fluff her house and prepare a great dinner for people she loves.

Kaye and John reside in Carrollton, Virginia. They have a daughter, Anne, and a son, Matthew.  Anne is married to Edward Brooke and lives in Oxford, England with son Henry, 2, and twins Matthew and Sophie, 7 months.  Needless to say, they are busy these days.  Their son Matthew is married to Amy, also a designer at Sisters.  ”God is very good to us!”

Her favorite quote from a client:  “Kaye, you let my fun side come out to play!”

 SHERRY BOUTHILLET

Sherry Bouthillet is one of those fortunate people who genuinely loves what she does.  As a little girl growing up in Mathews County, she always had a knack for making the home a beautiful place.  “I was always moving things around and fixing up my mom’s house,” she confesses.  Even now, Sherry loves applying her design know-how in her own home and helping friends revamp theirs.  “My husband never knows what he’s going to find when he comes home,” she says with a grin.

Since then, she’s worked as an insurance agent and a busy stay-at-home-mom.  But it wasn’t until her path intersected with Sisters Unique that passion and talent collided.  Under the mentorship of all the Sisters designers, Sherry honed her interior design skills and blossomed into a true artist.

Sherry is very candid about her love for design.  “This is the complete, honest truth. I love for people’s homes to be places they love to show off.  It’s the best feeling when I help someone fall in love with their home again or for the first time.”  Her philosophy is simple:  People who are proud of their homes want to invite people into them.  She also says the way a room looks in a magazine isn’t necessarily the best for living in.  “You can make it pretty,” she admits, “But if it doesn’t function for the way you live, it’s no good.”

One step into Sherry’s home, and guests are greeted with pops of blues, yellows, oranges and reds.  ”I love coastal cottage with traditional thrown in,” she says, describing her personal design style.  ”That’s me.”  Her dream home would be a cottage on the coast of Maine, pulling a little inspiration from decor magazines like Coastal LivingCottage Living and Domino.

Sherry and her high school sweetheart, John, were married in 1987 and make their home in Yorktown, Virginia.  She is a mom to two young men:  Devin, an aviation student at Hampton University and aspiring musician, and Austin, baseball star and “comedian of the family”. When she is not wearing her designer hat, Sherry enjoys trips to the lake with family, snow skiing, game nights with friends, singing, and of course – decorating.

JOYCE MURRER

Joyce Murrer’s favorite element of interior design is connecting with the client.

“I really enjoy helping them find the things they need and love in order to finish a project.  Whether it’s designing a whole room or looking for that one special lamp, my determination is the same.  Getting a client to a place where they have time to relax and enjoy their surroundings with family and friends is very motivating to me.”

Joyce had a love for home and appreciation for great architecture and interior design long before she made it her career.  Growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio in a great old dairy farm style house with clapboard siding and hardwood floors, her journey began.  Joyce credits her father’s love of wood and her sister-in-law, an interior designer, as great teachers and influences in her appreciation for beautiful things. Together they would re-cane chairs and refinish their treasures found on antiquing adventures.  She later found an appreciation for classic and urban architecture during her years working in the city and discovering its rich culture – taking in the beauty of storefront windows, art galleries and stately museums.  After moving to Virginia, she worked for Colonial Williamsburg where she learned to appreciate period pieces and quality workmanship.

Her first home was her training ground, designing and sewing window treatments.  “I’m traditional in the sense that I value quality pieces with authentic detailing.”  She enjoys adding elements of coastal cottage, shabby chic, and contemporary design to keep things interesting and relaxed.  Joyce favors rich, clean colors rather than muted tones, but really admits that “she loves them all!”  When spring rolls around, she has a hard time choosing her geranium color – pink or red?

Joyce joined the Sisters Unique staff in 2007.  With her passion to help people, she quickly became an integral part of Sisters.  She has a unique desire to listen, complete and finish well.

She and her husband, Steve, were married in 1979.  When they first met, they lived in the same apartment building.  “I was the girl next door.”  A handsome green “bankers’ lamp” sitting in his window caught her eye.  She decided that this guy must have great taste… and the rest of the story is history.  Joyce and Steve have three sons and two grandkids and live in Carrollton, Virginia.
